Debut Book Announcement!

I’m working on my first feature-length book and I need your help! I recently stopped working as a web manager in order to focus on writing full-time. The Internet allows creative workers to gather micro-payments to help support their work, and I think this is the perfect opportunity to try it for myself. I’ll be offering various gift packages for people who donate to support my project.

It will be a nonfiction work about where mankind is stuck, examined through the topics such as creative evolution, madness, and Jack Kerouac. I expect to be done with the first draft of the manuscript by late spring 2011, at which time I’ll be seeking a publisher. However, I’m perfectly capable of making my own e-book (see below), and micro-publishing makes it possible to produce paperback and hardcover books on demand, even one at a time!

For more information or to make a donation to this project, please visit my new book micro-site at nickmeador.org/madness.

Downward Is the Only Way Forward

A third essay of mine was published by Reality Sandwich on 9/9/10. It’s called “Downward Is the Only Way Forward: Following Inception’s Dream Trail” (the magazine added the subtitle, but I think it works well). It was inspired by the film Inception, and in it I discuss topics as various as Eastern philosophy, psychology, quantum mechanics, and Godel’s theorems. It’s about 7,000 words long, and I consider it a landmark in my personal development as a writer. Here are the first few paragraphs for your reading pleasure.

Vampire

Had a thought about vampires and I’m reading Charters’s biography of Kerouac so I thought I’d write a haiku. I intend to drop more surprises like this in the near future, so…enjoy!

vampire, a romantic
attempt to accept our bloodlust,
though we keep killing

CC-BY: A Step into the Belated Future

On August 12 the web magazine Reality Sandwich published a second essay of mine. Click here to read the full thing. Here’s the blurb:

Copyright law now protects creative works for almost a century. At the very least, copyright terms should be drastically reduced. Of course, the concept of revising creative compensation is based on the presumption that we will still use monetary currency with inborn inflation in the future. But a gradual transition would be better than picking up the pieces in a post-apocalyptic world.

A Supraterranean Manifesto

Exciting news! On July 16 my essay “A Supraterranean Manifesto” was published on Reality Sandwich, the web magazine connected with the progressive social network Evolver (click here to visit my profile on Evolver).

I’m thrilled about this because I haven’t done anything but self-publish my creative work since late 2008. As you may have seen, I’ve self-published various essays and videos on Supraterranean and my Refractor blog in the time since.

What’s even better is that they didn’t alter or edit the essay before publishing it! It’s about 4,300 words long, but if you have a moment, please check it out.

Welcome

Welcome to the new version of my personal website! My name is Nick Meador, and I’m a 2008 graduate of the Masters of Journalism program at MSU. This website is intended to be a nearly comprehensive guide to everything that I work on.

Please bear with me over the next few weeks while I customize the site. In the meantime, you can see my recent creative work in the box below. Also, I just self-published a collection of my early work, titled Seeking the Upward Spiral. You can get the PDF at the Supraterranean Books page.
