IPCLP at MSU

Adam Candeub is the director of MSU's Intellectual Property & Communication Law Program (IPCLP), which started about five years ago. According to the web site, the program "provides students with a solid foundation in cutting-edge legal issues through innovative and interdisciplinary curriculum while promoting a global understanding of the fastest growing legal specialty."

“The idea was to expand teaching and research in intellectual property law and to work with other people on MSU’s campus with similar interests in similar technologies,” said Candeub

During the program, students have the option to take a class on Communication Law or Copyrights. “The issue of academic networks, and the role of academic institutions in sort of policing the net is a common subject in law school class,” said Candeub.

Candeub acknowledged the fast pace of changes occurring in the content industries. “Copyright was previously concerned with copy [in a] physical format," said Candeub. "The law[…]has been struggling to catch up.”

Naturally, the IPCLP follows suit with the real world of law. “Law schools respond to what areas of the law are growing," said Candeub. Tremendous resources of our society are going to these areas.” There are about 50 students currently enrolled in the IPCLP.

CDs

Before technology and the Internet made digital music collections -- and computer piracy -- possible, most music was owned on compact discs (CDs).
